On Groundhog Day
In Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania
Punxsutawney Phil
Incites Groundhog
mania
Thousands watch to see
If he will see his
shadow
For if he does winter
remains
And he goes back below
On Groundhog Day
In Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania
Punxsutawney Phil
Incites Groundhog
mania
Thousands watch to see
If he will see his
shadow
For if he does winter
remains
And he goes back below
If it is cloudy when he emerges
Then winter will soon
go
But if he finds it
sunny
He quickly returns
below
The winter will not come again
If Candlemas day has
cloud or rain
But if the day is
bathed in sun
Then the spring hasn’t
yet begun
Fersommlinge is a feast
Celebrated on
Candlemas day
In south-eastern
Pennsylvania
In the “Fancy Dutch”
way
Where in the Groundhog
Lodges
Traditional foods are
served
In their typically
sociable way
Speeches are made and
to entertain
They perform g'spiel
skits and plays
But only Pennsylvania
Dutch is spoken
So, for English
there’s a penalty to pay
Jour de la Marmotte
As the French
Canadians say
Grundsaudaag or Murmeltiertag
Is the Pennsylvania
German way
But for the rest of us
We just call it Groundhog
Day
I heard that Punxsutawney Phil had last year
Bitten the towns
Mayor's on the ear
It spoilt the photo
opportunity alright
I wonder if that would
be a sound bite?
According to German folklore,
If the skies are
cloudy
When from its burrow,
A groundhog emerges
On Groundhog Day,
Then spring will come
early
But if the skies are
sunny,
And the groundhog
Sees its own shadow
It will return to its
burrow
And Winter will continue
For six more weeks
If Candlemas is sunny and bright
We will again feel Winters bite.
If Candlemas brings cloudy skies
Spring will be an early surprise
If Candlemas day
Be wet and foul
Then we all will wear
The usual scowl
Candlemas day
(February 2nd)
If Candlemas day
Be dry and fair
Will anyone
Actually care?

“Groundhog Day” is a comedy, screenplay by Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis, and Directed by Harold Ramis.
TV weatherman Phil
(Bill Murray) reluctantly has to do an outside broadcast in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on
Groundhog Day, to cover the story about, what he calls, a weather forecasting “rat”,
Punxsutawney Phil, who is in fact a Groundhog.
Furthermore, it’s his
fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his displeasure.
But he travels to
Pennsylvania anyway with Producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and Cameraman Larry
(Chris Elliott) and dutifully fulfils his obligation while barely concealing
his contempt for the whole event.
And that night when he
went to bed, he consoled himself that it was only one day, but on awaking the
following morning he discovers that it's Groundhog Day again, and again, and
again.
At first, he uses this
anomaly to his advantage, to seduce women, be outrageous, be obnoxious, all
without consequence, but eventually he comes to the realisation that he is
doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people,
do the same thing every day, unless he can change, if not the day, then
himself.
